Build your own house extension
How do you build an extension cheaply? Do it yourself - from design to completion. 80% of a builder's quote is for labour, and you dont need to pay architect fees for a 'conventional' extension - do it yourself.
This project will show you, step by step how I undertook every aspect of the planning, design and build of my 2 storey rear extension for a fraction of the cost I was quoted. If the whole project is too daunting or you don't have the time to do everything yourself you can still make significant savings by taking on some of the work. Getting double storey extension planning permission, you can do yourself. If you plan a fairly 'normal' extension then you can do the plans yourself, saving architects fees, or if you are a practical, hands on sort then you could do the digging or laying the foundations. You never know, once you have started you might just do the whole lot like I did and enjoy the savings.
This website covers my entire DIY Home Extension from designing, CAD drawing, submitting plans, gaining Building Control approval and building my house extension brick by brick with my own hands.
All the articles detaling my progress can be accessed through the Project Diary menu.
As of Christmas 2011 the structure is complete. Since then I have turned my attention to internal work and renovating the old part of my home in order to make the entire property more energy efficient. All the details of internal work and renovation can be seen on my other website ECO Home Renovation
I hope my experiences prove useful to you. Please let me know.
